2010-2011 Rear Diffs

I'm going to buy a 2011 Xterra. I'm looking at the S 4x4 AT right now. Seems to be the best deal. Since I had a gen 1 in the passed I'm not too familiar w/ the gen 2 x. When comparing the different trim levels it says the MT X's have a dana rear diff. I was under the impression that all gen 2's were Dana 44's. Are there two different diffs used on the gen 2 now?

The AT's have a c200k. It's a good rear diff. All the AT's have it (including myself). Rook (a member in here) ran & beat his to the ground for a good long time until he blew the spider gears in it a couple months ago due to a freak mishap on a trail.

The problem with it is that there is no aftermarket locker for it if you wanted to put one in at some point down the line.

The c200 is a different diff & has an aftermarket locker from what I was told, but that's not available in the Xterra's.

With the Dana 44, you can either get an e-locker built-in by getting the Offroad model, or add an ARB locker with any MT model X.

C200k- 2005 to present non OR/Pro-4x models with auto. No aftermarket support to date, but one company conducting R&D for a lunchbox locker. Very strong diff, rarely hear of problems, but again, no aftermarket support.

M226- 2005- present OR/Pro-4x and MT transmissions. A Dana 44 VARIANT, not a true Dana 44 (D44 parts will not fit in the M226 unless it is M226 specific). Had some issues from 2005-sometime in 2007. Has aftermarket support in the form of gears, lockers and LSDs.

How hard is it to find a used OR/pro-4x Dana? I just bought an 11' S and I'm pretty disappointed right now. I stupidly assumed it was the same axle just lockerless and was going to get an ARB since the locker was the only thing I wanted off the pro-4x and didn't justify me paying the extra $7000+ since I was just gonna swap out most of the stock components anyway.

dont bother finding a used OR model. Just swap in a REAL dana 44 or dana 60 out of a chevy 6 lug. If the gearing is right, all thats needed as far as welding goes would maybe be leaf spring pads and shock mounts. that gives you all kinds of locker and gear options for the future.

^^ are you 4x4? If so, you'll have to regear the front diff if you put the OR/Pro4x diff in the rear. The C200 has a different gear ratio than the M226.

Yes I am 4x4. How can I tell which axle and ratio I have? Ford used to write it on a tag on the pumpkin.
The 2000 - 2004's had a code on the door jamb placard, HG__, that told you.

I don't know if the 2nd gens do or not.

The tried and true way is to simply mark the driveshaft, and spin the tires, and see how many times the shaft rotates per tire rotation.

:D

The M226 (OR) has 3.36 gear ratio.

The C200 (Non-OR) has 3.13 gear ratio.

You can regear the front R180a to match, or you can do the Titan Swap (see below).

Many people that swap out the rear end from C200 to M226 will swap in the Titan M205 front diff from an Offroad or Big Tow edition. But, that requires new axles, UCAs, LCAs, etc.

I think I wanna do a titan swap... but in 4 years when its paid off... how much did it cost you parts wise?

^^ I bought everything new, so it was pricey: The diff, LCAs, axles, were $2,500. The UCAs, coilovers, extended TREs, and extended brake lines were another $1,500. The wheel spacers for the rear were $200.

You can definitely do the Titan Swap much cheaper if you get used parts.

New or used, the Titan Swap (using Titan Axles and not V8 Pathy axles) will give you a whole bunch more flex on your front end. It will make your vehicle much more capable offroad, and it is the best thing you can do offroad performance-wise short of doing a SAS.

Then wouldn't you need to have it narrowed? I'd think it would like ridiculous if you didn't. Also, I've never seen a D44 with that gear ratio.

not if you pull it out of a late 80's grand wagoneer. those are all narrow track and 6 lug.

as for gears...the closest i could find were 3.07 and 3.31

Ok so they have one locker for the c200 the spartan. They also had a limited slip on 4x4parts.com for a c200 33 spine I think. I really wanna Titan swap the whole truck but I've got a 6 year warranty and even with dealer pricing the parts are gonna kill me. I'm thinking limited slip may be the answer does anybody make a locker/ LSD for the front end (r180a I think)?

ARB is in development for an air locker for the C200K for 2nd gen Xterras. Be patient, folks. :)

EDIT: Just read an update posted April 10, 2011 stating that the prototype received final approval and is slated for production. No word on release date, but figure sometime this summer.
