I figured I'd ask here if anyone else on this board goes climbing/bouldering?? I just started doing it a few weeks ago and fell in love with doing it.

Me and my friends go 2-3 times a week to the local climbing gym and I've just had a blast doing it so far. My friends have been climbing for a little over a year and I never did it because I have a fear of heights and didn't think it would be fun. Then they convinced me to go do it and I loved every min of it.

I was also suprised at how much of a workout it really is. After my first day climbing, I felt like my forearms were going to explode!! The different muscles that you use to do it is completely different from anything I've done before.

If you haven't done it, I say try it, and if you do it, speak up!!!

I live in Boulder CO and I swear it's a climbing mecca. Climbing is super popular here cause we live but up against a rock formation. Boulder is surrounded by rock formations so climbing is huge out here. I've been several times in the past few months its an awesome work out. Out here though they climb some seriously crazy shit its awesome to watch, sometimes they camp out on 800 ft rock faces. They'll climb up 3/4 of the way and set up a hammock tied into the rock.. its insane. Then they'll make the rest of the climb early morning, Im planning on doing this one day sounds like so much fun.

I like rappelling down, climbing up not so much though I haven't done much of either in years.
I do have this one vertical face scouted out where I need the X as an anchor so I can rappel down but I need to figure out a way back up first!

Gibs ascenders and jumars! I did a pit rappel once many years ago and this was the only way out. If you think climbing is a workout, try climbing 210ft back up the rope you just rappelled in on.

I sort of got into climbing and bouldering accidentally. I was dayhiking and got so caught up in the places I was going that I lost track of time. I had to take a bushwack route back to my car just to make it before nightfall which required me to free-climb a small bluff. That got me hooked and I almost splurged on a ton of climbing gear but decided to upgrade all of my hiking/camping gear instead. But it's still on my wish list.

Just started climbing a bit again after several years away from it. Shelf Road, just outside of Canon City, CO, is about an hour away and has some absolutely awesome climbing. Garden of the Gods up in Colorado Springs has some interesting climbs and amazing views but climbing on sandstone is an art that I haven't mastered.
Steeze - I went to college in Golden and used to climb Clear Creek Canyon and North Table Mountain all the time. Just south of you, Eldorado State Park is pretty increadible too.
Kyle - You're absolutely right about the workout. I've been fairly active my whole life but I've never been in shape like I was when I was climbing 3-4 days a week.

I actually climb trees for a living ( they pay me for it..haha.idiots). haha I'm an arborist here in Ontario.
I have done a little bit of rock climbing but would like to get into it a little more. Alot of the things from rock climbing get transitioned over to Arboriculture ( but not everything becuz things are regulated and have to be tested, stamped and proven safe). With rock climbing you can make up your own slings and everything its pretty cool.

We do technical rescue so I’ve been doing rope rescue for many years now. We’re an old mining town so there is quite a few open mines and shafts. Fun stuff. We also use the ascenders to return to the surface, its nice though when there is a rope system set up to pull you back up.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you Kyle. I've only gone a few times with friends. Don't know much about it except that I like it a lot. I wish I could find some people who knew what they were doing and willing to teach and let me tag along. How far is Dallas, PA from Pittsburgh?

I would love to try it, but the only rock gym in Tulsa closed so I have nowher to learn. Sometimes I hate living in Oklahoma...no real place to wheel, no climbing, no pro football, do I need to go on. I have heard its a great work. And, I have a fear of heights so I thought it would be a good way to help me.

Oh yeah, I got my life's fill of prusik knot climbing thanks to the 75th Ranger rgt.
I do have a couple of very nice ascenders but not the athleticism to do it anymore. I'd much rather rig up a remote controlled winch cable ;)

Hey Kyle,
Some of us on LINXC head over to the Gunks in New Paltz every once in a while for some top-roping and some bouldering.
Definitely one of the best places on the east coast for climbing.
We have a ton of climbing gear.
My wife and I have gone bouldering on the beach boulders here on Long Island.
Pretty good stuff. And there are a couple good indoor climbing gyms locally to us, so climbing in the winter is the best, indoors of course.

Drop me a line if you ever want to go climbing.
We're always down for it.

Apexi: its probally around 4-5 hours from pitt to dallas

Kenn: I have heard there's some great climbing at the gunks...right now I am around a 5.7 climber but when I'm harnessed in, I like to try harder things. bouldering is what got me into climbing, but since I got my harness, its given me a new liking to top roping and gave me a new sense of confidence. If I'm ever going up there probally in the spring or summer I will give you a call or let you know in advance.

Yeah, the gunks are awesome. We only scratched the surface over there.
We have a bunch of books of all of the climbs for top-roping and boulder areas.
The only problem is that it gets really crowded.
My wife and I are a bit out of practice/shape so it'll take a few climbs to bounce back into it. We were 5.7 or so climbers, and V2-V3 climbers for bouldering.
She is a really good belayer even though she weighs less than 100lbs and is 5'-1".

We have pretty much all of the required gear for either top-roping or bouldering.
Nice brand rope and bag, a whole bunch of different anchors, webbing, ATC's. harnesses, two large crash pads, and at least 3 pairs of shoes each. Gotta love closeout sales at EMS and REI.

We're down for it whenever with enough notice.
Feel free to post up on LINXC when you want to do this and there should be a bunch of interest.

I don't think I could do the hammock thing on the side of a cliff face. Just unnerving lol.

I've never really done much climbing per se...but while geocaching/hiking I will often do some scrambling on some rocks, etc.

I did some rock climbing walls before and it is fun and yeah it is a really good work out for upper body.

One of my friends from here in Wy wrote the new Gunks book last year. Check out Extreme Angles publishing. It is full color and has tear out route cards.

Another avid mountain climber here. Climbed all the 14ers in Colorado, about a dozen state highpoints (mostly in the west), Kilimanjaro ... Rainier is on tap next.

Among the many reasons I love Xterras (just bought my second one) is because they're great at getting me to remote trailheads ... and, at the trailhead, I can actually sleep in the back with the seats down. Used to just sleep on a pad, but now I'm looking to custom-cut a piece of foam for the back (just ordered some memory foam online, which I'll cut to fit), but that's another story/thread.

As far as roped-up "rock climbing" goes, I've only done a little outdoors (First Flatiron in Boulder was my greatest achievement) ... but I climb at an indoor gym weekly. It is a great workout, as some people mentioned, and it's a lot of fun.

Congrats, that's a great achievement.
You'll have to give us PNW members a shout when you head this way, I'm sure we could stage a meet & greet up at Paradise to cheer you on for a Rainier climb!

Yes, I look forward to your experience building out your bunk.

I've just recently got into it myself. I've been hitting up the local climbing gym the last few weeks and plan on going bouldering shortly.

It's been a great time. I'm actually getting some climbing shoes today and I'll probably pick up a harness, carabiners, belay device, and chalk bag in the next couple of weeks instead of borrowing a friend's equipment.

I've been so excited about doing it that my wife will probably start doing it soon as well.
