I purchased a 2006 from my brother- in law last week. I drove the SUV from Mass to Colorado about 2K miles. I had the oil changes and had 4 new Bridgestone At2 tires installed and alignment before I took off. Long story short. I notices a winneing noise increasing louder intil by 70 MPH the rear end started to vibrate slightly. If I slow down the noise decreases in frenquency and volume to the point that by 35 MPH the noise is gone.

Before I bought the SUV he spent $2400 on replacing rearbearings, seals brakes and change the diffential fluid. I've sat in the back seat and confirmed the noise is comming from the rear end. One last clue if I take my foot off the gas the noise and virbration instantly stop even at 75 MPH

Sugestions?

Thanks

The vibration sounds like a U-joint that is bad. At your mileage, you are about ready for some new ones. Do them all at the same time. There is one in the rear driveshaft and two in the front driveshaft.

As far as the whining goes, it sounds like the rear end may be on its way out. Nissan had a few issues with the M226 rear end in the off road and manual model Xterras. In warranty cases, they have been replaced. If this is your problem, you may want to start looking for a low mileage wrecked axle off of another off road model as factory axles are expensive. That or you could deal with the whine until it develops more problems. A lot of times they will last forever with no other issues.

X2 ... they did have issues with the rear diff and wear out. Change both the rear u-joints reguardless. Use ones that you can grease.
