check out the threads on the distributor its probably going bad the 2000 and 2001 need to be replaced

 

clean the MAF. That might help.

Ok...where is the MAF located?

 

on top of the black intake pipe, 2 screws, pull it out and spray some MAF cleaner in it. Don't touch the element. Put it back in and try it out. Make sure its installed and plugged in. X won't run without it.

 

Kewl...I'll run up to Autozone this morning and get some cleaner. I hope this works! I can't stand my X to be running like this...

Ok. I went out and removed the MAF sensor. I examined the filament and it looks clean. Is it going to look clean even if it needs to be cleaned? I checked the air filter and the intake tube itself...looks clean.

 

did you look under the rotor for any dust ,pull the cap and rotor (there is a small screw under the rotor)what do you see?

Ok. Went out and pulled the cap. The rotor looks clean. the contact point was a little worn but not much. Everything else at the top looked clean. Now you mentioned the screw up underneath the rotors top, do I need to remove that and if so, what would I be looking for under there? Also..I might be mistaken about the amount of wear on the rotor contact point...what should it look like?

 

take the rotor off look in the very bottom of the dist it should be hospital clean is there any black dust or parts in the bottom?

 

Ok...took that screw loose. Took the top protective plate off....everything looks clean...I know that doesn't mean jack but thats what I'm seeing...

 

Ok...I'm looking at the rotor again...you know...it might be worn to crude...I didn't really look at it close close until just now...I'm going to run up to the Autozone and ask these guys if that looks like a problem...I'll get back to you in a few....

 

move the shaft up and down left and right does it feel tight no slop

 

If the distributor winds up being fine, I guess the next thing to consider would be the fuel sending unit.

I could be mistaken, but I think I remember seeing something about bad sending units in the really early models.

Also, just to make sure (because this happened to me), check the engine ground. Make sure that it has good clean connections to the engine, fender, and battery.

next go for the engine ground on the pass side of the motor (fender to engine )take the bolt on the fender off check all the sides to be clean for a good ground this location is a problem for getting rust under the washer probably because a lot water coming of the tire this bad ground will make a bad idle.

 

Heck yes! I ran up to Autozone and picked up a rotor cap...I didn't realize it was so worn until I looked at it under a bright light...it was near shot. I really want to thank both of you for your help...I posted this:

lol...sounds like there have been a few of us out there with this kind of problem. I picked the X up from a used car dealer. Whoever owned it before I did didn't give it much love...I'll leave it at that. But my wife and I have pulled the carpet, replaced several parts, repainted all the trim and bumpers, had the seats cleaned, new wheels and tires. The thing is almost 10 years old now and looks like a new model. I don't plan on getting rid of it for a long time. I'm just glad to have found the site...

Cool! Good work sorting out the problem. I'm glad that it was just your cap and not a far more expensive distributor.

 

Well folks guess what? It's doing it again. I drove it Friday to run some errands and it started doing the same thing. When I came to a stop it would idle roughly and then stall. What should I do next? I'm up for suggestions.
