Okay, I picked up a 2002 VG33ER X with 210k on the body and 170k on the engine (not sure if it’s the original transmission) and I’m pulling my hair about thinking of what I should do with my transmission. It’s an automatic, and the day after I got it my reverse went out. And by went out I mean it seems like it engages in the transmission because I can physically hear it but it spins like it’s in neutral. I also noticed that all the shift points are out of whack and seem very erratic, like it’ll shift very early or very late or shift up and down when it doesn’t need to. I changed the fluid in it and it was funky and probably not even ATF but there was no metal, haven’t done the filter yet. But what puzzles me is the fact that my TCU isn’t throwing any codes over this (flashing O/D light). So if one of my solenoids is bad or going out, it should signify me via TCU (so I’m assuming, correct me if my assumption is off please). At first I was heavily contemplating getting a shop to rebuild my transmission, but it would be cheaper for me to throw parts at it if nothing serious was wrong. I’m at a loss for what to do. Replace TCU, all solenoids, and any internal components to the transmission itself like the torque converter? Y’all are my last hope before I go sell my first born for a rebuilt trans ?

If you’re willing to replace a torque converter than it doesn’t make much sense to stop there. Having no movement in gear is not a good sign and continuing to rev the engine up will continue to cause damage. Could very well be a line pressure issue which would require internal diagnostics. Given that you were unable to identify if the fluid was ATF or not, this may be outside of your ability. Most transmission shops will give a reasonable price if you’re willing to bring them the unit for rebuild. Could be around $1000. LKQ has used transmissions for around $700. I bought a rolled xterra for $500 and left the transmission in it when i sent it to the crusher. These parts exist and I would put a higher value in the life of your children.

Another possible cause is the TPS. When the TPS went on my son's Outlander the transmission was doing all kinds of funky stuff. It turned out to be a short in the harness which was easily remedied.

Check your harness for cracks etc. His were very small cracks in the insulation that allowed arcing from one wire to the next.
