Transfer flush only done by dealer?

I just had a flush/fill done on my 2011 S front & rear diff. (171000 miles). I wanted to do the transfer case as well, but the garage told me that I had to go to a dealer for that, because it had to be Nissan brand fluid only in the Transfer case. Is this true? 🤔

It calls for Nissan Matic D fluid which is just plain old generic ATF. Any old dexron/mercon fluid will work. Cheap fluid will work just fine. I don’t believe the synthetic or “high mileage” fluids are of any benefit here. It’s way more important to have the correct fluid in the axles. Lots of people mess this up.

Almost certainly not. The front should take 80W90 but the rear axle requires synthetic lubricant. The online service manual for 2011 states the rear should always take 75W90 but this I believe is a misprint. The M226 rear axle should take 75W140. You probably have the C200 in your vehicle so you’ll probably want the 75W90 synthetic.
