Timing Chain Replacement or Not

I recently took my 06 to the local AAA shop>:D>:D to have transmission, power steering, brake fluids etc flushed. The shop has a Nissan master mechanic on staff. He mentioned that he heard a noise behind the serpentine belt that sounds like the timing chain. He said while it isn't a must do job today, it may need to be done before too long.

My issue is that this obviously is a big, expensive job. I don't want to rush into it. I have 162K on the car, how often should the chain be replaced, if at all? should I seek a 2nd opinion? How do I know that this job needs to be done??

Its the secondary chain guides

Hey Tom, It's likely that the sound is the secondary timing chain guides. The second gen X has this problem a lot. If you are handy you can do the job yourself. I did a full tutorial on it on my You Tube channel. Take a look! If you do decide to take it in then they will likely quote you 1500-2000 dollars. :(

Here is the video (warning, its a LONG one):

To answer your actual question (haha) you should never have to replace the main timing chain. As it is a chain and is built to last the life of the vehicle. However, The sound we are talking about it the secondary timing chains running directly against the steel head of the tensioners. There for at a minimum if you replace the secondary timing chain guides then you should replace the secondary timing chains.
