Changing Instrument Cluster KM/Mileage Question

I have a 2004 Xterra XE 3.3 and I need to change the cluster due to speedometer failing (speed sensor is brand new). I read somewhere that if I change the cluster the mileage will stay the same as the donor. Is this true? If so how do I program my original mileage?

I've wondered this myself. The ODO LCD on my 2000 Frontier started to get blurry and then a crack appeared right through the center. I can still read it when it's backlit at night and if I squint (and stand on one foot while rubbing my head and patting my stomach at the same time). I had considered getting a used cluster, cracking both open and doing an LCD since I have no plans to ever sell the old girl.
