Anybody know of any air box modifications, cutting the top out, etc.? And or replacing the filter?

Thanks

You better be careful in a down pour of rain.

People have been doing it for years with import cars as a cheap alternative to aftermarket intakes. I've done it to every nissan i've owned, well pretty much nearly every vehicle i've owned that didn't end up with an aftermarket intake (2 B13 Sentra SE-R's, S14 240SX which is now open element cone filter, '94 eclipse gsx, 89 bronco II, 89 big bronco) as well as numerous friends have on their cars. Nissan actually has pretty decent airbox designs and you get decent flow with the big panel filter, my friends 240sx performed better with a hacked airbox + K&N panel filter than an AEM CAI. In my experience you get a louder intake note and pretty good performance increase from it. You'd have to submerge most of the filter to have a problem, my 240 doesn't have any splash shields up front, nor front fender liners, and a big opening fiberglass front bumper and I haven't had an issue.

On the X, the only reason i'm going back to a full box is the dirt/mud collected right under the filter and will definitely dirty the filter up quicker, I didn't plan to go off road as much as I have when I first got my X, I certainly don't plan to do deep water, but its been fine with what we had to handle at coal creek last weekend, and I don't even worry about rain. But it was a huge improvement in throttle response, and very noticeable power increase with my SC.

Now if someone is planning on doing big water/mud holes I wouldn't recommend hacking an airbox, but if all you do is street driving, rain isn't going to phase it and its a nice performance gain.

I cut the bottom out, plus pulling the resonators...

I'll probably go back and order a new bottom piece eventually or go with a volant. I've got a good bit of mud underneath from last weekend at coal creek, didn't think i'd beat on the truck like this when I first got it.
So you still use the box, but just cut the bottom out of it? Just trying tounderstnad what you did....
