Hey everyone,
Sorry for the long post but looking for some honest opinions from true Xterra lovers! It seem like people that buy them love them and then buy 5 more over the years.
I’m looking for a capable SUV – something reliable, a beast in the snow (from Canada and we usually get tons out East), obviously capable off the pavement, while still good on the highway. Been trying to decide between this, the Jeep Wrangler (Sahara), and 4Runner TRD and there are lots of opinions out there. To be honest I won’t be doing much extreme off-roading (will be doing some) but I do a lot of hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and snowshoeing and I want something that can be packed up and go anywhere really. I also want something that can tow a hefty weight.
Between all of them tho, the Xterra just looks awesome. I’m looking into to buying a 2015 Xterra Pro4x, but just a little hesitant because I know a few Jeep and Toyota owners (who love them) but not as many Xterra owners. I’m just starting some research on it and figured I’d check with people who know it best.
From what I know:
- All equally thirsty for gas – so not saving any money there
- Pro4x has some extra options over the S model, which I like
- Heard the Xterra is better on the road than Jeep, better handling
- Heard the Jeep has better resale value – but to be honest I don’t imagine getting rid of this thing tho
- No idea about powertrain reliability? I’m not a mechanic kind of guy so I need something that won’t be in the garage every time I turn around
- What about in terms of needing service? I heard some awesome things about these rigs tho – generally they sound like tanks, very reliable, and have heard that engine can take a pounding with > 250-300 k
- As for the snow, how are the stock tires and wheels? I’ll be driving this thing in the snow almost half the year
Anyways, I really like this thing. I think it looks great and had it out for a test drive last week. I just wanted some honest opinions before going ahead with it. This will be first new car purchase - looked around for used but not much out there.
Everyone on here seems to love their Xterras, which kind of speaks for itself.
Any things to be aware of or to watch out for would be greatly appreciated! Also not sure if they are definitely being discontinued (I heard yes), the dealer told me they weren’t sure.
