Well, I (finally) got around to changing the in cabin microfilters (On my '01) ...airflow from the HVAC was getting too anemic, the window de-fogging was getting too weak, etc...

Its an easy job...the directions were wrong that came with the filters, but its not rocket science at least.

There are 4 screws holding the glove box assembly on at the corners, and the latch was held on by another 2 screws.

1. Remove the 4 corner screws

2 top corner, plus 2 latch screws.

2. Remove the 2 latch screws.

3. Remove the entire Glove Box Assembly.

The Glove Box Assembly...Removed to access the filters.

What's left after the Glove Box Assembly is removed...old filters are light gray colored.

4. Remove the small metal "C" clip holding the bottom most filter to the filter housing.

Taking off the C clip

5. Remove the filters, merely pull them backwards towards you. (There are 2 filters, a top and a bottom)

6. Clean up any detritus in the box the filters came out from (I vacuumed it out)

7. Slide the new filters in, with the little bulge on the bottom. The top of my air box was notched, so the filters only go in one way...its tight though, so put in the first one at the bottom, and slide it up to the top, and then work the next one in at the bottom, under the top one (They are interchangeable)...it takes a little wiggling, but it WILL go in.

(My new filters had a black plastic frame, instead of the light gray the original's did)

8. Install the C clip (A new one came with the filters) over the bottom filter's bulge and the lower bulge of the filter box.

9. Put the Glove Box Assembly back on, screw in the latch and corner screws.

10. Done.

:D

The filters came with stickers to put in the glove box that you fill in the filter changes dates...if so desired.

They ALL come with the option of adding the filters...if you didn't specify that option when you bought it/you got a trim level that didn't include it...its the same air box, just with no filters.

The directions say if the slot is still sealed, to just cut the blanking piece off with a razor knife to install the filters as a retro fit.

~$45 for two sets I think. (So I have a spare set now...)

The local stealership (Haldeman Nissan) wanted about $50-ish for one set.

Well, if I keep to the same strict filter change schedule, in another 100k, I'll have to clean out what ever life forms have evolved in my HVAC system again.

:D

Its one of those jobs I never get to....kind of like that front propeller shaft zerkless lube thingie I went and got a zerk for, and never installed....

ouch.

Yeah, I grease mine once in a blue moon, I use the Mobil1 synthetic grease, and frankly, it seems to last long enough even with water crossings and mud bogging.

When you have ~150k and are considering actually repacking, try it.

:D

Actually, I wander about almost doing things as a habit.

I had to get to the bank by 12 one sat morning...My shoe lace broke as I was hurrying to dress, so I went to the junk drawer where I thought I had spare laces...and noticed the handle of the drawer was loose, so I went into the garage to get a screw driver to tighten it.

In the garage, looking for the screw driver I needed, I noticed the bulb was out in the ceiling light, making it hard to see....so I went back upstairs to the closet where the bulbs are, and noticed a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner had laid over and leaked onto the hardwood...so I went to the other closet where the floor cleaning stuff was to get something to clean up the toilet bowl cleaner...

No sponge though in the closet, the kid had borrowed it to clean his car...and it was probably back in the garage...

I trudge back down into the garage, and hit the light switch to find the sponge...nothing, still dark....no bulb. Fuck.

OK, back up to get the bulb...I get the bulb...the wife asks if I went to the bank like that, in one shoe.

Its 1215.

well, I had no idea my xterra had a cabin air filter in it... I'm the second owner... umm, it's a 2001 and has 70k on it... it had the ORIGINAL filters in it, according to the sticker... that's pretty bad... You really don't want to know how bad...

I had to take the three front screws out of the bottom of the air box so I could separate the halves just enough to get the vacuum cleaner hose in there to clean it out.

I went and picked up replacements from napa, cost 18$... much better airflow now...

thanks guys.... hopefully the bump of this old thread will remind someone to check theirs...

Can somebody tell me if the 01 X has cabin filter(s) or not?
i went to auto stores and they tell me they do not have one instock. EVERY STORE!

or is it something i have to order online?

Mine is a 2001, and yes it does for sure...

all of them did not come with filters, but all of them have the capability to have them, if yours did not come with it, you can cut the port out of your a/c box for the filters to go in.

just open your glove box and look in through the hole in the back of it, you should be able to see the filter if you have one.

I got mine from Napa, they had to order it, but had it same day, apparently nobody stocks them. Napa has a better price than the dealer, BTW. I paid $18 for mine.

mine is a 2 piece. top and bottom.
AutoZone is asking $40 for one....

i called Napa.. no one answering at the moment.
(closed) ill try again tomm.

btw. MY FILTERS WERE DIRTY!!!!

Yeah, mine was one without the filters. I drive a loaded SE and was surprised that they weren't there and that I had to cut open the slot to install them. I'll be curious to see how much dirt they pick up.
