What year is your xterra and did it come with the towing package?
If it did come with a towing package (no matter the year) I have heard that they perform pretty well. Obviously they are not a V8 turbo diesel, but they can still get the job done.
If it did not come with the towing package then, depending on the year, there is some stuff you can do and it will perform the same.

Just considering Xterra for a tow vehicle, though I'd prefer a Jeep--not the short wheelbase Wrangler.

I'm chiming in, even though this has nothing to do with a camp trailer. We just bought a boat and then realized "crap, we need a new car to pull it". Thus, the Xterra.

Pulls our 1800 lb boat like a champ. Had no idea we were even back there when my wife pulled us up the ramp. I added a Curt Class3 Hitch for $120 from Amazon. Not the easiest hitch install I've ever done though.

I get that's not exactly what you were asking, but still providing that experience.

Ive towed boats, jetskis, and a popup trailer that has a GVWR of 3498. The X towed them all, however it struggled with the camper. I felt bad making it haul that sucker, but it did get it done. Now we have a 2012 pathfinder that tow the camper.
