I was researching where to buy 75w90 GL-4 manual transmission fluid (BTW - are there any inexpensive non-performance product available anymore?) and I learned the the fluid capacity of the 2WD transmission is nearly half that of the 4WD. I found that odd, as the transmission code (FS5R30A) is the same for both the 2WD and the 4WD.

Then, I thought, it might have something to do with the transfer case volume being included, but that doesn't appear to be the case either.

The part numbers are different for each of these transmissions though:
2WD: 320B04S510 (Alternate PN: 320B04S511)
4WD: 320B04S110

There is also an optional part number for the transmission and transfer case combined: 320A04S100 (Alternate PN: 320A04S110)

I tried to find good images of each, but was not successful finding an easy way to get my eye on them side-by-side.

Does anyone know if the 4WD model is actually larger and thus contains more fluid than the 2WD version of the same FS5R30A transmission?

Thanks!

Oh - and if you have knowledge of where I can get a non-performance based manual transmission fluid (75w-90 GL-4), please include that info also. :)

Can't help explain the disparity but I can tell you the capacities listed in the manual for the manual transmission are correct. Personally, I wouldn't go cheap. Something strictly GL4 complaint won't be and can be hard to find locally too. In my opinion it's worth it. Some say you can use something that is both GL4 AND GL5 compliant, like Chevron Delo400 ESI 80W-90. I bet that's relatively cheap compared to Red Line, for instance. I've experienced Nissan manual transmission issues in the past but not since I switched to Red Line. From what I recall, the more inexpensive and readily available GL5 stuff contains detergents that are detrimental to the brass syncros in our transmissions. Do a search for GL4 on these forums and you'll find plenty of information and opinions. You may even find some info on capacities your looking for.
