I have a 06, X, out of warranty (47K) and when I reach 60MPH I get a high pitch whine from the rear end area, by 66mph its nearly gone and when I reach 70, all's quiet. I have replaced the tires so I know its not that. Its not real loud, but I know its there and it can be annoying ....any ideas??

Welcome to Gen II Xterras. Seems like a common complaint. Try switching to synthetic and see if it quiets down. I'm on my second rear axle (OR model) and they both did it from day one. Helped when I went to synthetic gear lube.

Thanks for the heads up...but Whinning on at a certain speed then going away at another speed, ya think this is "common" for this type of problem or do other people (or yours) whine nearly all the time?

It's common on gen II xterras ('05 - '08). I have seen several posts about the whine at about 60 -65 mph and quiet at the other speeds. I have no idea why. And yes, mine still whines at around 65 mph but much quieter since I changed to Mobil 1 synthetic. The OR models require synthetic gear lube in the rear axle but the Mobil 1 helped.

My 06 with the 6-speed manual does it too, I've even changed the diff lube with fresh and that didn't help it. I just ignore it now.

Yea, it's frustrating and damn annoying but I've learned to let it go as so many people have said the same thing.

I have an '06 OR 6sp and i don't hear that noise. Now Im gonna be paranoid and I'll probably hear all kinds of sh*t!!!

Powertrain Warranty is good for 60K miles. If it ends up being a problem with your rear diff, you are still covered for another 13K miles.

Yeah it seems to be pretty common. Some people have taken theirs to the dealer and have had the diff replaced. Others have decided to live with it. I haven't heard of any of the non-OR diffs breaking.

im new here.. i have an 06 X 4x4 6spd recently been to the dealership many times for noises.. i had my rear axle assy. replaced @ 29K miles due to severe whining.. they have this issue w/titans/armada's/pathfinders and frontiers also.. my new rearend has less than 5k mi's on it and its beginning to whine also.. they say they cant hear it and that it sounds normal which is BS .. no gearset, set-up properly makes any noise whatso ever. sorry im venting as i have many problems w/my 06 X w/34K miles on it and the dealership cant hear a single problem other than normal noises

I have an 07 that does the same thing with no real answers at this point. Changed the Gear oil in rear end and it seemed to help some but still noticeable.
