I'm trying to do some high-level investigating into where I might be leaking coolant and trying to learn more about this particular hose in the attached photos.

Unlike most other hoses under the hood, this one has quite a bit of play in it. The lower part of it is wrapped in a what looks like a metal spring of some sort. I'm not sure how much play is expected, but if I jiggle that hose it deflects a quarter-inch in either direction on the lower connection point. Is that normal?

I'm suspicious of this hose because there's quite a lot of "gunk" build-up around the lower connection that is damp, suggesting it leaks something around that area after every drive.

The leak does not cause any pools or puddles under the car when parked, but it does produce a noticeable smell after even short drives. A look under the hood suggests that some coolant must be leaking and getting flung around onto hot parts. (There's always a tiny bit of coolant and gunk on the metal timing hook around the fan belts, for example.)

Anyways, just curious what the name of this hose is and what part of the system it belongs to because I'm having a heck of time finding in the service manual and/or online.

Thanks in advance.

(Hose is large diameter, curved, and on passenger side beside battery.)

The Gen 1 Xterra crowd should know exactly what that is.

Oops, did I post in the wrong forum?

I'm thinking that's the high pressure, power steering hose. If so, I'm wondering if just the rubber part of the hose can be replaced or if you need to replace the entire metal part as well. (Based on looking at parts catalogs.)
