My neighbor is selling his Xterra and I am pretty set on buying it. It's a 2000 SE 4x4 @ 180,000 mi's. It's in really good shape. He did a lot of work on it, including a new sound system, bigger tires. The paint, body and interior are all in good shape.

He wants $4500. KBB has it at about $2,500. He said $4,500 is a good deal but looking around at other Xterra's, it seems kind of high.

I've lurked around a bit and see that there is a wealth of knowledge on this board. I'm looking forward to getting to know more and adding my two cents where I can.

He said he could go down to $3800. Not bad but it will need a clutch soon. When you do that you should do a transmission refresh too. So that puts it up about $2000, to $5800. It is a sweet ride and I really like it but I see newer ones with less miles for around $5900.

he is way too high - KBB tends to be higher than NADA and way higher than Black Book . Yu would be better off looking for a Gen 2 X
Thanks. I've been looking at gen 2's I've read that there were a lot ore problems with those middle year gen 2's though. This one is older with a lot of miles but there's benn a lot of problems recently addressed like a new knock sensor and brand new warn locking hubs this week.

It's a tough choice.

I agree that it is way to high nada is the way to go with 4x4's and with the 2nd gens it is the radiator that is the problem. On some models it has a small crack that leaks coolant into the transmission. As far as I know it is only on the automatics. So if your already looking at tranny work then I would keep other options open. Good Luck

NADA has it at $3,925. Most everything is more expensive in San Diego. It seems las though used car prices are no exception. 4K appears to be a little less out of line than I initially thought.

I do like the 2nd gen better. The thing about my neighbors Xterra is that many of the little things that go wrong have been addressed. He just put in a new knock sensor and Warn locking hubs. Hopefully he'll come down a bit more.

180K is a lot of miles on a vehicle. Even if well maintained you have to know in the next 20-50K you will need engine work so you need to plan for that. This is the old engine design

That being said - if you are convinced this is the car for you- I would show offer him 3200 cash. Personally I would not give more than 2500 for this vehicle.

If he is at 38 and you offer 32 be prepared for a counter at 35

Find one still showroom like mine, expect to pay 15k even with the mileage, it has driven through all but Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut. Once the new tires go on, the north east will be off the list, just need to float it to Hawaii after that.
I didn't hunt down a 1st year optioned out Xterra without my reasons. Value is about to skyrocket on my X like others in storage. Just like original 240 Zs
