2002 Xterra died on me while entering the freeway with a steep incline.
Towed it
Shop tells me timing belt broke and alot of damage was done
Bought X - 6 months ago (private seller).
At 1 month replaced starter.
Now this.
Options appear to be shop does repairs approx 4 grand; or get used engine. (Haven't located one yet). Or what that would cost. Limited income. Limited knowledge.
Not sure how to proceed.
I like my X as it suits my style and needs.

I've read on here of folks who lost their timing belt on the freeway and no damage was done at all. I'd ask to see the damage rather than just accept it.

Realize that I’m a bit late to the discussion, but I’m one of those that had a broken timing belt but no damage.

Have a 2001 SE that the belt sheared off a bunch of teeth years ago. Happened around 150k miles, and now have almost 330k miles. First time doing the belt, got it all back together but had cams lined up to wrong positions so belt was a few teeth off causing engine to have a misfire. Drove it like that for couple hundred miles before having chance to tear it all down again. Even that caused no damage.

Let us know how you make out.
