My Xterra won’t fill with gasoline the pump stops after just a half gallon or so. I think my vapor canister may have been filled with gas. It happened when using gas cans to fill up the tank. Can I take the canister out and tip it upside down and let it evaporate and drain out? I really don’t want to go out and buy another one for $170. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

It could be a blocked or restricted tank vent, which allows air to be pushed out while the gas flows in. The vent is a smaller hose than the fill hose and should come up to somewhere near the top of the filler neck.

This can be a saturated canister, a canister filled with dirt, a blocked vent line, a stuck vent control valve, water separator packed with mud. You’ll probably want a new canister if that’s the problem.
