Well short story I've been wanting a scan gauge for a while, however at the hefty price of $179.99, just wasn't practical.

After doing some research I found something called the ultragauge... basically the scan gauge but better.

It has a bigger display
a nice back-light display for night time too
and more features
best part, fraction of the price at $69.99 with a $9 mail in rebate

Basically what the unit does is it plug right into your OBD II port on your X and that's how it is powered/ reads the ECU. You can set it to whatever settings you prefer and go from there. It alerts you if you have a code or CEL is thrown, and tells you what the code is. Also you can clear the code with the ultra gauge unit.

Install was simple, best spot for me was by my speedo, I used heavy double stick velcro, ran the wire down the steering column and into the OBD II port.. it also comes with a windshield suction mount you can use as well, I just wanted it by my speedo.

The screen is fully customizable

Mine is set up with: Instant MPH, RPMS, Fuel level in tank, distance to empty, time until empty and the Engine temperature

If you're looking for a handy tool then I would highly recommend this. It turns on and off with the X via the OBD II connection and is nearly instant.
Well worth the money to fully read everything that is going on with my X.

I looked at the site, and it does look to be a great deal.

It can even recalibrate for different tires and gear ratios, etc.....

The caveat is that is doesn't list a 2001 Xterra as one of the compatibility options....meaning, in this case, that some gauges/functions (Even if the device supports them on other rigs, etc..some ) may not be available to us.

Can I safely assume the "sale" is pretty permanent?

LOL

"Limited Time Offer"

As pretty much the time for our existence on this planet is limited - I would have to say that they are not lying.

Any one know the difference in the ECU of First generation vs 1.5 gen?

Alright for us First gen guys this is the info my code reader reads from the engine. Its labeled as live data but im not sure if the code reader or the ECU lags because its not exactly instant. you might get more info from the electric unit above but as TJTJ stated our xterra isnt listed.

The above unit also does the same exact thing as the unit i have and cost the same.

The 03 for example had some differences in programming from the '01..but the harnesses are interchangeable.

When I put in the engine from an '03 into my '01...I was told I HAD to use an ECU from an '03 that matched the VIN etc.

It was BAD advice.

The '03 engine was not SENDING all the info the '03 ECU was looking for...as the TRUCK's harness/sensor wires, etc......didn't have plugs for all of the '03 engine's controls (Most, but not all were there) and the dash lit up like xmas.

So, the engine could not talk to the ecu...the strings between the cans were not there.

I swapped in a '01 ECU - and the lights went out, and its been fine in that regard since.

So - They are completely swappable, but, programmed differently.

Do they make one for 2nd gen? aver. mpg?
It's OBD II compliant. It will work with any vehicle manufactured after 1996. No need to make different units for different vehicles. Individual reporting parameters won't be the same between different vehicle, as the vehicle computers can only report data from sensors that are connected to it, and not every vehicle has all of the same sensors. 2nd gen Xterras, for instance, don't have a manifold pressure (boost) sensor. But whatever data the engine's sensors reports to the ECU should be displayable on the Ultragauge.

I opened at ticket with ultragauge support and they were able to answer a few questions. I was mostly concerned with boost readings from my 02 SE/SC. It reads map pressure, but it's absolute of course so at WOT it will read 14.7 for a NA X. So all boost will build from there, etc. I then asked if I could program or have it programmed to correct for this so it read 0 for 14.7 and they said no, it was not an option. Just a little FYI.
