I believe the U-joint at the front end of the rear drive shaft is wearing out. 2006 Off Road Xterra with automatic transmission, no lift.

The symptoms keep on evolving so I am hoping for a confirmation or other suggestions.

When I returned from a long road trip to Skeena country in northern British Columbia late last April, the Xterra was working just fine.

About a week later, I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel column and seats that seemed to originate from the drive train. I had the wheels balanced but it did not go away.

1. The vibration occurred only while the vehicle was under power in the just under 80km/hour to 100km/hour range. (50 to 63 mph). It varied in intensity depending on the weight in the vehicle.

2. Then a few weeks ago, the vibration under power in that speed range disappeared and was replaced by a chattering sound that my wife initially described as a whistling sound. Others might describe it as a squeaking sound. That occurred mostly at lower speeds under light power or no power.

3. Roughly at the same time the intermittent chattering started, I noticed a slight vibration while coasting in the 80-100km/hour range. Slight enough that I might not have noticed it if I were not paying close attention.

My mechanic has had the vehicle up on a hoist and even removed the rear drive shaft but any play in the U-joint or rear CV joint was very slight if any. I also put the rear wheels up on a ramp and tested the U-joint and CV joint for play.

Thoughts?

Alignment is fine. Steering is tight. Tires are Michelin LTX M/S and they appear to be wearing evenly. The X corners well (with aftermarket Bilstein shocks). I don't see any seal leakages along the drive shaft or the rear axle. Runs just fine in 4WD High up to 80 km/h (50 mph). Rear differential fluid was checked.

Well I would vote for something being worn but am stumped if everything has very little play I know my 2000 x steering wheel shakes a little very minimal and you can feel it sorta bouncing at 30 I think its something with the tires I have on it as 1 side has like 4 wheel weights and other tires have like 2.

All Off road editions are 4WD.

It was vibrating while under power, now it vibrates slightly in the same speed range while coasting (no power).

Now it also intermittently chatters while under modest power at lower speeds.

Mine im not sure on I bought it that way but it is 4x4... Anyways when im going 30 it vibrates than kinda levels out Im not sure what causes it... But yes it does sorta vibrate under all conditions at that speed. I think it may have them little pellets in the tires that are supposed to help balance them.

Oh no I just read your is a 2nd gen 06 correct? I would check the radiator fluid for transmission fluid I read it could be goo or slime almost but that's a fairly common problem on those to 2010... Check it asap and if it does I would drain it flush transmission and bypass the cooler.

Pull the radiator cap what color is the fluid ?
A healthy yellowish green. Transmission fluid is fine.

The Strawberry Milkshake of Death (SMOD) is a potential issue, but not here.

Dennis,

I probably should do the bypass and install a mini-rad for the transmission alone. I worry about the off-road and towing performance.

Was planning to flush and replace radiator fluid later this year. Minimize the odds of the SMOD. I glance at it every now and then for signs of distress.

Strawberry Milkshake of Death (SMOD): I am still covered under warranty minus a couple of thousand dollars in co-payments.

-----------------

Around town today, the Xterra experienced a slight chatter but only at very low speeds within the first few minutes of moving the vehicle. Will something please go 'clunk'?

You wont get any warning it will just be pink maybe next year ,maybe tomorrow, usually the day after your warranty runs out!
Exactly.

Translation: the symptoms I was and still am experiencing have ZERO do with the cooling system.

I went ahead and had the OEM radiator switched out all the same.

I wonder what the real numbers behind the SMOD are.....

For the other issues, I'll look elsewhere.

I am especially atune to a worn UJoint, having just replaced the entire drive shaft in my 2wd 2006.

Ive put about 160 miles a day since the beginning of the year. At that time I started noticing a clunk in the vehicle when I put it gear. Also, I noticed that as I accelerated and decelerated at highways speeds the automatic trans felt like it was hunting for a gear as it clunked up and down through the gears.

to make a long story short. It was only recently that I correctly diagnosed the problem and the differential literally fell out as I backed out of my driveway on my way to the repair shop. I paid to get towed to the shop and a new shaft was installed and everything works smoothly now.

Old thread wake up.

FIXED. It was the rear drive shaft U-joint. Now I have a rear drive shaft U-joint with a grease nipple.

Vibrations and chattering are all gone.

Coincidentally, I finally paid attention to the brake wear bar and got the front rotors and pads replaced. I mention this because I figured out that I the old rotors were warped and should have been replaced some time ago.

Just added an extra leaf to the rear suspension. All leaves were re-arced. Rides 1 1/2 inches higher. Saggy bottom all gone and the new ride is not too rough at all.

Note to self: Get jack stands, with the exception of the rear suspension, I can do all of the above work with proper jack stands.
