I have an xterra 2001 186K miles V6 automatic. After the truck has been sitting overnight or for a number of hours there is a long lag between when I shift into drive and when the transmission engages. It takes upwards of a full minute to engage. In reverse it will engage immediately. This lag started about a year ago but was only a few seconds, now it has deteriorated. After it engages it will drive fine for the rest of the day. I found out if I shifted to low it will engage sooner with only a couple of seconds lag. Any similar experience or suggestions.

Same issue same year and 2wd. Any real solution here? Ive done fluid and filter and the problems worsened.
its likely low or dirty fluid or a clogged filter, with that age and mileage it could be normal wear to shift solenoids failing to worn/dirty fluid to clogged filter
