Good morning all,
I have a 2010 Nissan Xterra that I have had since it was brand new. Just recently I noticed there was a squeak when backing up. It sounds like it is coming from the back wheels. With over 53,000 miles on the vehicle, I am thinking brakes and plan to have it looked at this week.

I figured I would ask just in case I am not the first person this has happened to...

Just check the shoes and re-adjust them if they are still ok (parking brake shoes are separate from the rear disc brake pads).

I guess it depends on how good the pads are. I've used some very cheap pads in the past that didn't last 40,000 miles.

I recently replaced the rear pads on our Altima because the vehicle was squeaking really bad when backing up. Turns out the parking brake shoes were worn unevenly and were rubbing. After replacing the pads and adjusting the shoes, the squeak went away and the parking brake worked much better.
