Hi All,
Great forum and first timer here.
I am getting a progressively worse sound with the following characteristics:

  • Only when turning right (about 90 degree turns)
Sounds like spring that is pulled and released with a clank
I think it happens when coming out of the turn, not into it
Sounds like it is coming from underneath the driver's feet on the outer part of the truck (I think i can feel it sometimes)

Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

I've had that too for as long as I've had my xterra (2+ ish years now). I haven't had any problems come from it but I know what you mean, it just doesn't sound good. It's not something I've been able to diagnose either since it only happens at certain times and when the suspension is under stress and you can't really simulate that while under it, looking for what might be wrong.

So I guess what I'm saying is that my car is doing just fine and I have the same noise, if that gives you any form of comfort.

Do you have sloppy steering or bump steer? Bump steer is when you hit a bump in the road does it jerk the steering wheel? Is the X affected by sloped roads? Do you feel like you have to constantly adjust the steering?

I don't think i have sloppy steering or have to adjust it too much. It pulls a tad to one side. I will check again when i drive to confirm i am not correcting the steering more than i said here.

which side does it pull to? might have a bent rod (hee hee bent rod, like bill clinton) i'd say get the wheels at full lock and look at it see if anything is hitting (don't try to turn the wheels when sitting still, you might bend a tie rod or f-up your steering, you should drive it, turn the wheels hard then stop and look)

Back on topic of the steering noise, my noise is only once in a while, I might notice it twice a month. which makes it near impossible to diagnosis. no other symptoms, and nothing mechanically out of the ordinary. I have to wait until a problem presents itself
