I have an 01 Xterra and my brakes are very soft. We have replaced the back brake shoes, front pads, both calipers, and the master cylinder. We have bleed the brakes on 4 different days and they are still very soft. When the truck is not running the brakes are very hard, but once you start the truck the brakes almost go the floor. Does anyone have any ideas on what else could be wrong or what we did wrong with the replacements.

Thanks!

The only times I have had "soft brakes" were,

1) Bad master cylinder
2) Air in brake lines - are you sure you closed the valve, before you let up on the brakes?
3) Brake line leak - look for brake fluid on ground.

Thanks. We have now replaced both front rotors and new pads to go with the calipers and master cylinder. It's much better but still not as firm as they were before. Does the ABS unit also need to be bled?
