I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to mount my spare up on the roof, and I was wondering what my options are.

I searched all forum areas for "rooftop, roof, top, spare, tire, mount"...to no avail! How'd you guys go about mounting your spare to your rooftop cage? How much of a pain is it to get down?

Depends on the tire and if u have a gobi ladder. If u want to mount it up there, def get a gobi ladderr rack. You can get a Dephep lo pro roof rack and strap it down. I'm sure you can modify a rear tire carrier to work. Maybe get ya a used one from a junk yard chop it up and either bolt it or weld it up there.

I would go with a basket on top with the tire in it. If you go right on the roof you may rub your paint off from vibration. Search for some rack options.

Some people just jam the roof rack bars up against the tyre and rig up some suspension out of ratchet straps.

However realize three things with putting the spare on the roof.
  1. Tyres are heavy to move onto and off your roof; it's a fantastic way to scratch up your paint and take out your windows
  2. Your CG will move up and make your truck more liable to wobble/tipping on the trail
  3. DRAG. Watch your MPGs drop!

KChurch86,

For what it's worth. A spare tire up in the roof basket looks great. I've done it now for awhile but am now getting a rear tire carrier. Pros and cons of having the tire up there:

Pros
- looks great
- it's out of the trunk area

Cons
- Pain in the butt to put up there and take down
- fuel mileage decreases
- can get in the way ie; getting into the garage, overhangs etc

The cons really depend on the size of tires you are running. When i had a 31 up there it was easy. I put a 33 up there and it's a pain. You have to consider how your basket is mounted as well. If your basket relies on the factory rack for mounting then you have to consider the forces on it with the extra weight. And the more weight up there you are changing the centre of gravity. I don't think any tire you would put up there is going to be the factor in tipping but it's not going to help. I strapped mine down with rachet straps but getting or making a mount just like the one for the snowboarders wouldn't be tough at all. Depending on where you live you might want to have a way of locking it too.

I have no idea if this helps? ;- )

Lol mine is just straight on the roof with the x-bars wedged up against it, plus some straps.
Probably not too good.
One thing good about it is if it's on a basket it's raised about 3-4 inches, and I think it's on there pretty securely.

i moved my rack crossbars closer together, laid the spare on top, and held it down with 8K lb ratchet straps...worked great(held fine), but it did drop my gas mileage significantly, plus the truck was a LOT tipper (didn't help not having sway bars, but yeah)

i got tired of it after a while and moved it to the cargo area

When I upgraded the tires so that the spare didn't fit under the truck, (which is a lousy place if you actually need it, say, in mud, or on rocks, etc...), the first place I put the tire was on the roof.

I just slid the cross bar back to pin it, and ratchet strapped it down.

It held great, no movement, quite secure, etc.

It made the truck more tippy off camber and in emergency maneuvers, etc....too high a polar moment (Think of it as a weight at the end of a lever going from the tire on the roof, to the truck's roll center...with all that leverage to pull you over)

It was a PITA to actually get the tire down/back up there....you DON'T need a ladder, just open a passenger door, and step onto the threshold, and then onto a rear tire...and you can get at it.

My MPG plummeted, its another wall to push through the air...and it breaks up the laminar flow of air over the roof...too much wind drag.

I took it down, and put it into the cargo hold..but, I carry a lot of cargo, so that wasn't working either...but handling-wise, laying the tire flat, brake side up, to leave a large bowl facing up...worked best as far as COG went...and the bowl part was at least a place to stash stuff....

...if I had a little less cargo to load, I might have just left the tire flat in the cargo hold.

So, I ended up biting the bullet, and getting a rear bumper/tire carrier, which solved the problem.

So, of ALL the solutions, the roof for the spare is the worst....the money you save on the cheap mount is spent on gas anyway....its like RENTING a place for your spare.

Thanks everyone for your input, you all brought up a lot of pros and cons (mostly cons) that I hadn't even thought of! Looks like I won't be going for roof-mount after all...I've moved my sights to a pair of DIY roof-mounted light bars, one in front and one in back. I've got all the materials in mind, just need to finalize the design, buy the goods, and git 'er done! I'll try to do a build thread if anyone's curious on a how to, but mostly so I can show off whatever skills I've got, haha.

Thanks again guys!

I think I may have to take you up on that offer. I've got the wiring, lights, and switches all picked out...what I'm lacking ideas for is the bar itself.

Originally I thought PVC, because it would be relatively easy to work with, durable, and light weight, and super-affordable. A 10 foot section of 4 1/2" OD is like 14 bucks at Home Depot, 3 1/2" OD is under $10. But then I couldn't think of a good way to mount the bars to the factory roof racks :-/

I'm going to go cruise CL and the classified section to see if anyone's got a pair of factory cross bars.

Any ideas on a PVC mount or other suitable material to make the bar out of?

Hey man, not sure if the crossbars from a 2000 will work but u can have mine for 50 bucks plus whatever shipping is. Not sure if it would be worth the shipping though... my zip is 31909 if u wanted to look into it

I know they're less than 40" long, and I bet they'd both fit in an 8x8" box (or box-shaped wrapping) so I went pretty standard on size. a 40"x8"x8" package at 10 pounds, and one at 20 pounds, to cover the bases of size and weight.

I tried UPS and DHL too...UPS didn't like my selection of zip codes, and DHL wouldn't let me select USA as a ship-to country?

Anywho here's FedEx quotes:

Obviously no big rush, so I'd go with the cheapest ship time.

What kind of payment would you be okay with? Is a check okay? (I should've brought this up earlier, haha)
