Where can i get a tool to take off my roof rack on an 06'. I plan on practicing my bed lining painting abilities on the roof rack before I do all my plastics!

I'm not sure about the 2nd Gen Xterras but Gen 1 (and 1.5) have a tool stored near the jack assembly under the rear cargo area.
Okay! Thanks a lot, I'll check it out once I'm off work!

I have tried removing mine before but i cant get enough torque to remove the screws. If you get a T30 star thingy for a socket wrench thing. That way you can get the torque you need.

second gens have a torx screw driver that is under the rear seats along with you jack. that screwdriver is the size you need for the roof rack but be warned some people have spun the nutserts trying to remove the roof rack
Thanks for letting me know where that's kept on the 2nd Gen Xterras.

If you look at the took it likely has the size stamped on it as "T-30". You can use a socket as another CX member described. Tool is about $2-3 from an auto parts store.

I found it! thank you very much, getting torque with that screw driver is damn near impossible, luckily i had a T30 and a 1/4' drive to use, they come off quite easily if you have a socket available for it. Today im gonna finish taking it off to start the bed liner paint im gonna put on it, hopefully it doesent look too derpy with the rack off.

Does anyone know what would be the best way to prepare the roof rack for painting it with something like bed liner? I dont have much experience painting but i think i can manage as long as i prepare the rack right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I spun, WAY too many nutserts, they just keep spinning, like almost half of them are spun, is there any way I can still take the rack off so I can paint it or am i going to end up having to paint it on the truck. :censor:

Got the rack off and painted, the sewage company came to pump my tanks, and backed the BLOODY truck straight over the top of my roof rack that was drying on the ground...I did just purchase a new one and installed it today. I might hold off on the roof rack again just because of how difficult it was to get a good coat on with plasti dip. Here are some pictures of what I've done so far. I also have the tailights tinted but didnt want to get a picture because it was pouring out haha. But it sure does look a lot meaner than it did before and believe it or not I get compliments on how it looks. Next i am going to plastidip only the plastic bits on the roof rack. And Because i dont like the way the bed liner spreads, i will be painting my bumpers and side trim with black plastidip because i like the way it goes on and it dries nicely. I will post pictures, maybe even attempt to do a write up on painting the bumpers and trim. Please let me know what you all think of what i've done!!!

I just painted my roof rack and found that the nuts inside the rack that bolt it to the feet or holders uses a T25 star. I found it way easier to paint with it off. Mine didn't come out the greatest but idc either. That's all my fault. I found that if you use a socket set with a t star thingy it's a lot easier to remove/install

Next thing im going to do is the exhaust and headers. Then Im gonna try and save for a chip of sorts, Im more interested in insane power and performance than anything because off roading near me is a bit of a hike so ill stick to the pavement. please let me know how your removal goes!
