So yesterday I picked up a used LoadWarrior with the extension...for $100! The only problem with it was the giant EXPLORER decal on the fairing, because as the guy told me, it was an "original Ford part" that was only available through a Ford dealer....I just played along for 100 bucks. He insisted that he help me install it right there on the spot, so we did, but that Explorer decal gave me the shivers, and since I had about an hour drive to get home, I stopped on the side of the road and peeled off a few letters...it turned into XPLORE until I got home!

Last summer I picked up a rack mounted awning made by SportRack that was on liquidation because it was being discontinued. I paid $99 instead of $399! It's made to mount directly on the crossbars. I was wondering if anyone else has an awning and a basket, and if so, how did you mount it? I will probably end making some custom mounts so that I can put the awning on the outside of the basket, otherwise it will sit too high. I also want to be able to put 2 kayaks up their too. Any suggestions or pics will be welcomed!

(I think I might have some pics of the awning mounted to my old uhh...ahem...Escape...!)

So, given the underwhelming response, I'll assume that not many of you have roof rack awnings...so I went out and bought 2 x 2" muffler clamps and a piece of 3/16" x 3/4" flat stock...added a little spray-on bedliner and here is what I came up with....

That looks good. Any pics of it set up on yours? I currently do a homemade setup with a tarp and two tent poles. Could definitely use something a bit more "stylish". :)

The pics above of my old red Escape shows the awning setup last summer, I haven't had time to take pics of it on the X yet, since I just installed it about an hour ago and now I have to go to work.

Yeah, I've done that before! For the price I paid, it's great...it's definitely less cool than the ARB model, and it uses alot of tie-downs, but for a hundred bucks brand new I can't complain.

That's a pretty cool set up... I've never seen one of those before. I wouldn't mind having one of those on the X.

That's pretty AWESOME! One thing I did notice was how close the edge of the holes come to the edge of the flatstock. I would assume that awning weighs upwards of maybe 25- 30 lbs? Looks like its resting all its weight on the four edges where the muffler bolt goes through. I would hate to hit a bump and have it completely abandon you : (

Yeah, they were out of 1" so I bought 3/4" instead...but it isn't really that heavy, it weighs about 15 lbs. Since this a prototype, I might convert these mounts to a shovel mount and make a heavier duty one for the awning...we'll see.

Thanks! Actually, now that you mention it, I don't! I'm off tomorrow so I'll open it up and snap a few shots!
