2000 Nissan Xterra
4WD
Automatic Transmission

So, I have no reverse lights.

Checked all fuses. Literally. Nothing burnt.
Replaced backup lights.

Did google searches out the wa-zo. Only close item I found is a Backup Light Switch....but it's for Manual Transmission.
Contacted Nissan dealer. Talked to part guy and gave my Vin #. Said he couldn't find ANY backup/reverse switch for my vehicle.

All in all...someone please give me some help.

Check the neutral safety switch on transmission. Look on the side of transmission above the pan. It’s has a little adjustment. By a slight adjustment it might engage reverse lights. Looks something like this https://goo.gl/images/sBSPkc

First lets get some definitions straight.

Neutral-safety switch - "This switch prevents you from starting the engine when the transmission is in any gear other than Park or Neutral. Manual transmissions have a similar safety device that is commonly located on the clutch pedal. This ensures that a manual transmission vehicle can't be started unless the clutch pedal is depressed."

Next;

The PIC you provided is of the Gear selector switch and really the ONLY relation it has is putting the vehicle in reverse in which when it does go into reverse, there is however a separate switch mounted on the trans that actually has a pressure sensor with a ball that gets pressed on by the selection of gear, there is NO adjustment for it, but they can and do fail from time to time.


To the OP;

This is what you are looking for, or at least close representation to it.



Now what I would do just as a extra step is get your self a DVOM, [digital volt Meter] and find the circuit and prove it out first. before you go wrenching on it. In some cases, there may be another circuit combined with it that you may not have noticed isn't working and that it might be just a fuse, just to cover all bases before tearing it down further.

Do you have a DVOM?

How about a Test light, preferably a computer safe one from the likes of MAC or Snap-On?

Do you have a FSM for your truck

You will need one of the first two and I or someone else here can at least point you to a free digital and downloadable copy of the Factory Service Manual [FSM] for your yr truck to help you further and in all matters.

Sorry for the mixup with the name. I thought the switch you posted were only on standard transmissions.

It's just a matter of correct terminology and then followed with good advice, I don't think you meant anything wrong.. familiarity and experience goes a long way too.

I try to help in the sense of correcting misconceptions 1 thread at a time when I can. ;)

Lol Undrstm8ed it was bothering me a little, I thought I was on the right track from past experiences. So I wanted to educate myself,this is what I found. abeez3 here are a few links that might help you in tackling this problem. Hope this helps I couldn't find that pressure switch any where in the automatic transmission section.
