Hi All,

I have a 2000 Xterra which has a rusted out exhaust system that lets exhaust out at at least one if not two spots before it gets to the end of the tailpipe. I was talking to my dad about replacing it myself and he said, "you should probably just pay someone to do that because those bolts get so rusted on that you'll have a hell of a time getting them off."

My question is, #1 . How hard is it to replace the exhaust system, and #2 . How much would it cost to put in a basic system?

Thanks!

he is correct those bolts rust on and can be a bitch especially without power tools and new bolts/studs/nuts ready to go as they may have to be cut off. you can try soaking them for a few days (spray them overnight let it soak all night repeat for a few days in a row) in pb blaster to try and loosen the rust and free them but that usally only allows hand tools to move them enough to strip them. cost to have a system replaced depends where you are and what all you really need replaced. just having the pipes changed isnt alot but new pipes muffler and resonators or cats can cost an arm and a leg. i would probably swing it into a muffler shop and let them find the leaks and show you what NEEDS replacement and the cost then decide how to proceed.

I recently replaced the exhaust on my 2002. From new Pacesetter manifolds back. Two and a half inch pipe with a baby Turbo Muffler. It took them 40 minutes while I waited on the vehicle, it was $269 with a lifetime warranty. Tuffy Muffler.

thats not bad, full exhaust system changes vary wildly around here. generic no name parts might cost $100 to swap over or up to $500 depending where i go. but if i go to "little mexico" as the northside is known here i can get good top notch parts slapped in cheap as garbage, as there are about 300 exhaust shops all within 5 miles of one another.

I replaced the valve cover gaskets and new intake gaskets. I then pulled the transmission with the t-case, and installed a new clutch. Afterwards, I pulled the front end in order to put a new oil pan on the truck. After completing that, I removed the cracked manifold on both sides and replace them with the Pacesetter catalytic converter manifold combo. Which I'm quite happy with, for the record. Changed all the plugs wires, cap, Etc. Considering all the labor I save by doing the work myself, I was not about to crawl under my truck and install some half-ass carryout from the auto parts store, clamp together good old boy exhaust. My guys at Tuffy are the best at bending pipe in our town. They custom-made and welded the y-pipe (which saved me a ton of money over stock), then custom built and fitted the rest of the exhaust. And finally, welded it 100%.
Good luck on your project, I'm sure you'll find something for your budget and needs. I find $269 and 40 minutes of my time to be a bargain, to say the least.

so you must have a welder? see i dont have much outside an electric impact and a good set of hand tools to work on the truck with, so exhaust work is not happening in my driveway.

That is my exhaust setup.

I paid $110 for the Magnaflow muffler off Amazon, and $140 to do all the bent pipes at a locall muffler shop. I wouldn't do it myself, even though I have a welder. Access is tough without a full on lift...and they were able to custom bend the pipes from the cats back.

My brother recently did a similar move and purchased the Magnaflow muffler off Amazon and paid a muffler shop to weld it up. They did ~100 just for muffler install without all new pipes...and wanted ~250 for custom bent pipes.

If your goal is just to patch up a few holes...they can probably touch it up with a welder for cheaper than doing a full exhaust.

I would shop around, and look for local hole in the wall muffler shops, and avoid chain places like Meinike or whatever. If you can find a local mom and pop shop that can bend the pipes real quick and weld it up, you can get better deals.
