My Xterra died a week ago.

Transmission fluid(s) and other fluids in the radiator mixed due to cracks :temphot: , or i guess we can say that the radiator ran out of F's to give.

I guess last October, Nissan extended some warranties to 80,000 miles. Well by that time, my car was at about 92,000 or something along those lines. So I was screwed from the start.

I did have the 3rd shifting solenoid replaced not long ago (4-7 months) and the nissan dealership said they only cover what they replace. which is bull****

Has anyone else had this issue?

It is actually quite common on the second gens. You have a few options. 1) Find a good dealership and see about doing a goodwill repair. Nissan covers cost and you aren't out anything. 2) Contact Nissan USA directly and try to get a goodwill repair. 3) Flush the hell out of the transmission (multiple times), replace the radiator, and hope for the best. They have been fixed this way before, they have also not been fixed this way before. 4) Fork over the money for a new transmission from Nissan (don't opt for a rebuild, it never works well). 5) Get rid of the truck.

Those are basically your options and I even listed them in the order I would follow through with them.

GUSTLING: It was a 2005 SE, Lightning Silver.....

RYANDAVENPORT:There was no point in flushing the tranny, the gears were being deformed slowly as I drove, the gear teeth were being bent. So my parents decided to get a new X for college. The dealership gave me $7,400 even though the original trade in value was $10,000. they dealership took at least a $3,000 hit.

Pretty common issue for 05-06's. 4 runners about the same age have it too. Guess it must have been a screw up by the supplier. I tell pretty much everyone with an 05-06 to replace theirs now before it gets more expensive.

Yeah i heard it was a common problem on the '05-'07 models...

Too bad you did not act on it, before it went out!

I am sorry if you thought I was saying something bad of you. I was trying to say it was too bad that this had to happened, before you knew that it could do that.

Lesson learned any body with 05 to 07 auto trans needs to do the cooler conversion or there going to be in the same boat !!!

I think a a lot of people think it wont happen to there truck why take a chance. Its to bad the factory doesn't step up and take responsibility it clearly a defect.

The factory extended the warranty on the transmission, also those that have messed up, regardless of being under warranty or not, have had good luck with Nissan covering the repairs. I did the bypass, but it runs slightly higher temperatures in the transmission at certain times. I will be adding a second auxiliary cooler before I do anymore mods just in case.

Also, just for clarification. 2005-2007s are prone to this problem. Nissan switched transmission fluid in 2008 and it is rumored to have fixed the problem, but I don't know that anyone is completely sure.

So EXACTLY what year models are effected by this? I have an 01 SE 2wd auto. Do i need to at least do the bypass? When/IF i do need to do the bypass do i need to flush my systems? Is there a way to do the bypass w/o loosing any fluid?

The issue is strictly on 2nd Gen Xterra's (2005-2012) but is mostly limited to the 2005-2010 models.
