What up Xterra gang! lol. I need help plz! So Ive noticed that my brakes are super soft. They are able to push all the way to the floor with ease. I hear a loud hissing noise and it sounds like its coming from in the car.
I been driving it and its okay at low speeds or if I slowly brake early. If I press the brakes fast, sometimes it gives out and I have to push really hard(pretty scary at stop signs)

I checked the fluids and its maxed.
Checked under the car and all lines look dry.
I read that if you push the brakes while car is off, then start it, if the pedal depresses then the booster is good.
So my booster is probably good.
Thinking maybe I should bleed the brakes? Maybe theres air in the lines?
My brake fluid is green so its prolly best I change it anyway.
Ill try that first and if it still has the problem, is it time to change the master cylinder?
Been lookin online on when to change the cylinder but im still unsure.

Any suggestions guys??

It sounds like your master is failing. If you pump brakes does it feel like it’s building pressure? If so, then bleeding system and flushing old stuff out with new isn’t a bad idea to start. I would also make sure your calipers and wheel cylinders aren’t seized and in working order. There is no schedule time to change a master. It’s either good or bad. Also your booster is fine, usually if they are bad you get a rock hard pedal. Almost like having manual brakes. Hope this helps, Chris.

master cylinder isnt a wear item doesnt have a change interval. To check the booster you need to pump the brakes with the car off three times then press it hard it should go very firm on you, then start the truck with the brake depressed and it should drop and come back if it does then your booster is ok. master cylinders typically leak before anything else goes bad in them. what year is your x? and if older than 05 what engine? have you had the pads/rotors change recently? if so some idiot may have not know what he was doing and introduced air into the system that or a bad caliper/brake line or master cylinder seal are about the only way to get air in without improper bleeding if its a 1st gen(older than 05) your may have a slowly leaking wheel cylinder in the drum brakes at the rear and its not noticeable or it has a bad seal that is sucking air in as you let off the brakes the 05+ models have 4 wheel disks so calipers all around, the rear does have built in drums in the rotors but these are all mechanical and have no effect on stopping your car they are only activated when you use the parking brake, a wheel cylinder is basically the same thing as a caliper but used in drum brakes (same function to apply the fluid pressure and push the friction material (shoes) out against the drum) these leak alot on many cars mainly because drum brakes rarely need servicing and they get hot the seal degrades and wears and you eventually get a leak. if the master is full i would be inclined to think you dont have a leak, unless you take it to one of those quick lube places that tops off fluid every time they do oil changes (never have them do this) as brak fluid should steadily go from max to min in the tank as your brakes wear thats a good way to check your brake wear. if you have shops constantly topping this up it not only negates this, but also can introduce air into the system the more times the cap is open the more air is likely to get in. if your brake fluid is green you need a flush and bleed not just bleed. green brake fluid is very odd, it usually turns dark brown to black green means the anti corrosion agent is breaking down and your fluid is well beyond usable life and is more than likely the reason why.

Check the vacuum line to the brake booster. A leak in the line or at the connections will cause a hiss that can be heard inside the car.

This link might help. It outlines the causes of hissing due to brake issues.

yes, that is true, there is also a plastic l connector the hose goes on before going in the booster on the 05+ that may have a crack as well. easy way to check for leaks here is to take some carb cleaner and spray the hose with the engine running if it revvs up you have a leak that green fluid is concerning though you definitely need new fluid

Thanks everyone for the replies. I finally got around to bleed the brakes. It was a pretty fun process, im glad I did it. Thats another thing learned. I did the dumbest thing tho lol. I used a box end wrench that ratchets so I was able to open the bleeder valve but couldn't close it lol what an idiot. Anyways the Xterra's brakes are a lot better. I been driving it around and it stops a lot better. Thanks again guys!
