I have an '09 that I would like to mount a secondary alternator to run my on-board welder. I'm not seeing a lot of space for it, but am curious if anyone has done it and how.

Also looking for some suggestions for a dual battery set up.

thanks,

John

I think if mean green makes one it will power the on board welder. I know we can run one that way mike. but the alt is like $300 bucks

you'd have to check on 4x4parts.com to see if one is avaiable for an '09
Not to mention, you'll have to upgrade the alternator wiring to a bigger gauge...I asked 4x4parts about that and thats what they informed me before I backed out on getting one.

Hmmm...secondary gel cell batteries, installed OBW's, bt no secondary Alt's.

I can't think of a 2nd Gen with a OBW actually.

What I would do is get a higher amp alternator that would mount where the OEM went...there are a few sources, but an easy option would be like this:

https://www.4x4parts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=5278

And yeah - you already know you need to up the ga on the wires that have more juice to carry, etc, like this:

Then do an underhood control unit set up like :

Hope that helps!

Sounds like it'll run you over a thousand bucks if you bought all that stuff that TJ have posted up there.

Thanks TJ for the link to the upgraded cables, I have bookmarked it for future mod when my alternator needs an upgrade.

LOL

Yup

But, after he bought a second alternator, and so forth, he'd be spending it anyway to do right.

I mean, you can stick weld with two sets of heavy ga jumper cables and 2 batteries, if you have some rods....w/o all that hoo ha.

Of course, a stick weld like that is really ok for a trail repair, but its not going to be pretty.

wow, thanks

this was my first post and I am amazed and pleased with all the thoughtful responses!

Actually I bought a Premier power welder (an old one) on Craigslist for $200 with a 140 amp alternator. I was hoping not to use it as my primary charging system and isolate it so I wouldn't have to worry about it affecting my warranty or wiring (i hate electrical issues!). I've read about using it as a stand alone and just need to mount the second alternator.

thanks
