Hi I have a 2001 x 4x4 6 cylinder with 130,000 miles with signs of oil leak between tranny & engine. my questions are could it be the rear oil pan seal or the rear main seal. Also whats a fair price for a backyard(competent ) mech to repair it. Thx in advance for any advise

To find out if its rear main or oil pan first pull the starter ,take a flash light and look at the back of the flywheel if its wet with oil rear main leak if its dry oil pan .Another test for the pan is to park all night on incline with front down back up when rear pan seal goes out the front usually does to from dry rot and have a puddle after over night parking. Both you easyer to pull the motor with 4x4,mucho $$$$

This is what a rear main seal oil leak look like. You might not even need a flashlight. Of course this is with the tranny removed but you get the picture.

I thought it was amazing. 5 year old compressed oil that was sizzling for everyday. My dad was a lil pissed when he saw some spilled on the floor.
