My o/d is automatically on when i start the car do i leave it on or push the button and it well say o/d off?.

Pushing the O/D button will turn the O/D off, and correspondingly the O/D off light will illuminate. Depending on the driving conditions it is up to you whether you want to use it or not.

Rpm is much higher when i push the over drive button and it well show O/D off. I do not know if the wire is backwards or that how it is?

That is how overdrive works. Overdrive is the highest gear in the transmission in an automatic transmission. It brings the RPM of the engine down at a given road speed to facilitate better speed and fuel efficiency. It also helps your vehicle provide the best performance in higher speed cruising. O/D helps when cruising at more than 50mph.
You can read up on the pros and cons of using O/D. If used properly you could gain a few more miles per tank. Check it out.
