What oil do you run in your Xterra? I have always ran Mobil 1.

I use bargain brand and change mine more often. Seems to work fine for me if I let my engine warm up. It actually gets that cold up here in Fargo so I may think about upgrading when winter rolls around. SRStaff, how would this cold test affect you down in Alabama?!

Mobil 1 Synthetic every 6,000 miles for me.

I just started using Mobil 1 synthetic but my xterra seemed to really like the regular pennzoil high mileage. Changed oil every 3k miles but I will keep the Mobil 1 for 5k miles.

You're really not supposed to go from synthetic back go non synthetic, I believe.

Pointless test, engines don't operate at -40 degrees. That is why anyone in that type of weather uses a block heater before startup.

Mine did. -45 in Alaska with no block heater, I had a cheap magnet low output thing on the oil pan. I had 0 weight mobile 1 but those 2 nights I set my alarm every 2 hours and went outside and ran it for 10 minutes.

In the meantime, I run 10/30 mobil 1 and change every 3,000 miles, filter every other change. I can show you camera feed video of my internals, it shines metallic oil gold throughout.

Mobil 1 5w30 for me with 5k change intervals. Always use a good quality oil filter too, it's just as important as the oil you choose. Wix has been my go to filter for a while now, but there are several other good ones out there.
