I own a 2002 Nissan Xterra. I bought it at 109k miles and it now has 140k. During a road trip last weekend my Xterra broke down about an hour from my house. We pulled into a gas station to clean the windshield went to start it back up and it just cranked. We had someone jump us (not knowing what was up) and it still did nothing. Being late we got a hotel and had the car towed there. The next day I read on some forums that if you remove the distributor cap you can see if the rotor turns while cranking to verify that your timing belt is working. I did that and saw that the timing belt was no longer working. I didn't have time to fix it myself so I found a shop to so it for me. They quoted me $557 by the time they we're done it was just about $800. The radiator was broken during the removal and some teeth we're missing from a gear the timing belt was on. I got the Xterra back yesterday and it started up fine, runs great but there is a "whurring" sound coming from the engine from 1.5k to 2k rpms. I was just curious as to if it's just the timing belt wearing in or something else.

If its a noise that it wasn't doing before, take it back to the shop. the longer you wait, the chances of them covering their work will be less likely.
