I will start this off by saying I am very car illiterate, so this description will lack technical terms, but I will do my best. I have a 2000 Xterra SE 4x4, it has 162,000 miles. I have had it since about 90,000 miles, other than rouitine oil changes, and I've had to have a few belts changed, but i cannot remember what they were. Today I was heading back to school for work and the check engine light came on. Figured it was not that big of a deal at the time and I could have it checked out once i got to school. About 3 miles later in rush hour traffic the rpms dropped to zero, a green liquid, with a gel consistency started coming from the engine over the windshield, and the rest of the X. I got in the emergency lane and my x was smoking heavily, the same green gel was all over the engine compartment, down the side of the car, and all over the chassis underneath. I believe it is antifreeze but im not sure. Once a tow truck arrived I told him what happened and he said it may just be a radiator hose that came loose, but obviously he probably doesnt know since he didnt look at it. Because this was at 7 oclock tonight I wont know what really happened until tommorow. All I really would like to know is, what may be the problem? what would be a general estimate to fix this? and how long would it take? Just so I can start to make preliminary financial plans to fix this around the holidays. Again I appologize for my lack of car knowledge and id appreciate any responses.
