Can anyone tell me what this part is actually called and what it does ? This is my wife's truck and I just walked out of the house to see this hanging down. is it critical and can i drive it for a day until i get it repaired ?

Looks like the rear sway bar broke you can remove it,its not need most off road people remove it from the start to keep from damaging the rear shocks,i would check the rear shocks to make sure they are not damaged.

Not just off road people pull the sway bars.
I pulled front and back sway bars, much better ride all around.

Unless you own a corner hugging sports car, sway bars only make your ride worse.
