So I bought an '06 Xterra Off-Road with 106k miles last week and it's been making a rotating grinding sound under the front of the truck. I wasn't sure what the sound was, so I checked all the wheel bearings, the breaks, the rear diff, the transfer case, the engine, the control arms, the pinion bearings and any lose piece on the underside of the truck. Nothing.

I finally figured out the problem. It was the tires, I have 265/75/R16 M/T tires, and they cause the nasty rotating grinding sound. I swapped them out for a friend's A/T tires and the sound was gone. My question is, can I keep the M/T tires on there without damaging my truck? The sound is unpleasant and is more significant that the sound a regular M/T tire would make. It's not just a rumble, it's actual grinding.

I need to drive 1000 miles to Utah in 4 days, hoping to not have to buy new tires.

Thanks for your help!

LOl the tires are probably scrubbing. m/t meaning mud terrain? Yeah almost sure its just the tires rubbing since the a/t dont.
