I just picked up an 05 Xterra with 237,000 km on it. It’s been relatively smooth and quiet but suddenly I’m getting a low pitched, bassy bogging/hum sound when I’m stopped at a light. As soon as I let my foot off the brake and allow it to roll, it shuts right up. Same if I put it in neutral or park. Sounds fine when accelerating. So it’s like it really doesn’t like to sit still in when in gear.
Is that normal? It’s pretty loud sometimes to the point where it kinda shakes the dash. I do have catalytic converter codes on the CEL for both banks, which may be related to the issue. I just don’t understand why having it in Drive and stopped would be the only time I hear it.
cheers.

Start with the basics.

Scan all 4 code families, not just the P codes. What codes does it have?

With most scanner apps you can see live data, so pull up the tach and watch it. Tip into the accelerator a bit until the noise goes away. What was the RPM with the noise, and what is it when it goes away?

Have you checked for any exhaust parts that are loose and/or touching the body or frame anywhere?

How good is the air filter?

Does the noise change if you turn the blower fan off or to another speed?

Turn off the radio - does the noise change or go away?
