A 3 inch suspension lift and a 2 inch body lift is quite a lot of height, almost "Super off-roader" territory. If you're looking for something to give you a bit of extra height to help you get to more remote locations you will probably be alright with just a body lift to get some more clearance (which there are a thousand threads on, just search it). Also, a 2 inch body lift can be accomplished for like $150 and can easily be done at home, while a suspension lift can easily be at least a grand depending on what all you plan on upgrading. Its also more of an involved process to do at home.
Also, you can buy larger tires to give you more height/clearance. With a 2 inch body lift, you can fit 33's on a second gen with a bit of cutting off the plastic on the wheel well.
If I were you, i'd start with a body lift, see how you like it. If you still want more height, then consider new tires or a SL.
