I'm in the process of changing a series of gaskets, hoses and stuff and part of the job includes relocating my knock sensor to the top of the engine.

The sensor was originally bolted to the engine block, when I relocate it what should I do with the old bolt and hole? Should I

A: re-install the bolt to close the hole
B: remove the bold and leave the hole exposed
C: do something completely different

Thanks.

I doubt the hole actually goes into any chambers of the engine, otherwise there would be a seal. I'd leave it or put a bolt in it but I don't think it matters either way.

The important thing is I am pretty sure you can remove the knock sensor by breaking it off so you don't even have to dig down that deep. I haven't done it personally, but I hear you can get a screwdriver down in there and pop it loose (by breaking the old sensor). This will be what I do when I go to replace mine... mine constantly throws that code.

I am in the same boat. 2004 sc xterra constantly throwing knock code. Broke down and decided to change. Took me a full day to get lower intake off due to one highly corroded stud. Now that I finally got to the dreaded kS, I am Second guessing myself about putting it back in stock location. I read stories about people replacing the ks and getting thrown code again soon after. I do not want have to do this repair again. Should I relocate? Need some advice before I put everything back.

Disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic, I'm just a guy with a bag of tools and no fear. I'll give you my opinion and my actions and you can cross-reference with the pros.

I've read enough threads to believe that relocating is not a bad idea. My relocation point plans to be on the top of the upper plenum using one of the unused bold holes (the old bold won't fit there, will need a new one). It's my understanding that the reading will still be accurate and it'll infinitely easier to change should it go bad at some later point. Based on the work I just did, I can't see any reason why I'd go back into the engine at that level any time soon so I'm not letting a knock sensor make me regret that decision.

Bottom line, I'm moving it. I'll post a pic later if you want. Should be a day or so.
