I have a 2003 XE 4x4 manual transmission. Several months ago I went to start it after work one night and all I got was a single click under the hood. The lights and radio all came on still. The next day it started a couple times but then did it again later that next day. Within about 3 days it was fully back to normal and was absolutely fine for the next 4 or 5 months.

Tonight I had this problem again after so many months. With the clutch pressed in it will make a single click under the hood but not turn over.

I'm not sure what this problem is and why it went away for so long and then came back out of nowhere. I have a feeling it has something to do with the switch in the clutch but then would it still make a click if the switch was broken?

Please help this is driving me crazy especially since I thought the problem had gone away and now my truck is stuck parked at work for the time being.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

from having this with other cars i have owned it sounds like the starter is starting to go up or has gone up. easy way to figure this out is have someone with you try and start your X while you are tapping on it with a hammer or something hard to see if it will kick over and start.

Update

So after leaving my truck at work for the weekend and trying various things on it....tapping the starter while trying to start it, jump starting it....etc. it just kept doing the click so Sunday night I got AAA to tow it to the shop. They just called me saying they don't know what's wrong because it's starting every time for them. grrrrr! I don't know what this problem is and why it comes and gos like this.

Check your battery terminals! if they are dirty it will have bad contact and won't have enough juice to engage the starter and will act like the battery is dead and give you the "click".
