So this has been happening a few weeks. I'll be sitting at a stoplight or something (out of gear) and the engine will rev itself up and hold then drop and any variation of it. It never goes BELOW what it should be but it'll just jump up and down randomly. I'm thinking I need to clean the idle air control valve? Would this procedure be the right path to take?

Pretty sure that hose DOES go to the idle speed control valve. And I figure shooting some carb cleaner in there could help clear it out if it is gummed up. But just want some secondary opinion on it if anyone else has had to clean theirs before.

Yes clean iac and throttle body but be careful moving the throttle plate by hand. After cleaning relearm the idle following these procedures

Very good. Thank you for the super fast reply. I did the method in the video and there was a pretty immediate difference in the idle speed being irratic. It's not perfect but I think cleaning it again with carb cleaner and or doing the throttle body will fix it completely.

my xterra sometimes did that and i think it just does that to help build oil pressure.

Perhaps? I mean I am running 10w-40 so I'd imagine the oil pressure would be pretty good... After cleaning that IAC valve it's gotten considerably better. I think another cleaning of it and perhaps cleaning the throttle body will fix the idle completely.

yep after 100k+ miles things get dirty even if the air filter is religiously cleaned or changed never gets 100% of the dirt going in, plus the way intake systems work tends to slowly build carbon over time due to egr dumping unburned fuel back into the intake at the throttle body to reburn

All of these extra emissions systems made mandatory are what's making engines less reliable...

exactly, you will find repairing cars the emissions systems are by far and away the most problem prone areas
