Hello all,

New to this forum and new to Xterra. I just bought my first Nissan Xterra last week, it's an 05 with 60k miles and in need of a few repairs.

I'm writing though because I think this car is haunted. The other day, my girlfriend and I stepped out of my car, took a few steps away, and the car suddenly started... I have asked the dealership, they said the previous owners never said anything about a remote starter, and I immediately searched under the dash and in the engine compartment to find some sort of remote starter hidden somewhere.

In case it helps, here's the blow-by-blow of what occurred. My girlfriend was driving, we parked and she unlocked the doors from the driver's side panel. We both stepped out, I locked the door from the passenger panel and we both closed our doors. She then also locked the car, turning the key in the driver's door twice towards lock. I then said, "I think it's definitely locked" and pulled on the front passenger's handle twice. We both walked about two steps away from the car when it suddenly started.

I was immediately confused and concerned, so I unlocked the car and asked her to try putting the car in gear and driving, since the seat was at her settings and I wouldn't fit. She sat in the seat, put her foot on the brake pedal, and the car turned off. We've tried recreating all the same steps and have not gotten the same effect since.

Has anyone else had any issues like this, or does anyone know if there is some sort of funky combination of pushing, pulling, and poking things that would allow the engine to turn over without a key or passenger?

First off, Welcome to ClubX.

It sounds like it has a basic aftermarket remote starter installed. but instead of having two separate remotes on their key chain, (the oem and the aftermarket), the original owner opted to have it hooked up to the lock signal. Try hitting the lock button on the factory keyless remote 3-4 time quickly in a row, and see it it starts. If you don't have a keyless remote, try turning the key in the driver door to the lock position 3-4 times quickly, and see if it starts.

Report back and let us know.

Oh my goodness, you are the greatest! I tried it and it totally worked! Unfortunately, the dealership told me that my car didn't come with remotes, but I could buy one and have it installed for $250. I'm thinking I might just buy a third party remote and try programming it myself... But thank you for the help and quick response, that was EPIC!

No problem, anytime.

Yep, just pick them up from ebay or whatever and program it yourself.

You should be set, lol.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Go ahead and star a new thread about it, and we'll see what we can figure out for you. There are a few of us on here that are good with aftermarket alarms.
