So after much wrestling (and buying multiple swivel extensions), I managed to get the 3 bolts that attach the rear cats to the exhaust manifold unit. But I can't bloody figure out how to get the driver's side rear cat out?? I tried rotating it, angling, etc -> but I can't see a way to get it out without removing the cross member or drive shaft. Any advice?

Remove the X-member or driveshaft... Why stumble over a shortcut when honestly and clearly you provided your own solution(s). I get it, you're looking for either a truth to the shortcut or validation of the removal of other components but as I see it; I think you knew the answer already just didnt believe it. lol

Are you replacing them or hollowing them out? Whats the need for removal?

This is off of a parts truck. Those cats are in great shape, so figured I'd keep em. The one I'm driving has a lot more rust - the cats still work fine (tested O2 sensors) but the heat shield is disintegrating, and I'm guessing they'll go sometime soon.

I remove the front drive-shaft but still no luck. I guess cross-member is next -> the one on which the tranny sits seems to be the one that would free the cat up -> I guess I'll just support the tranny with a jack and unbolt it. And yeah, just seemed excessive, I thought I was maybe missing some trick, but I guess that's how she goes.. Thanks for the help!

Yea, even since way back in the day, 300z's were not any easier to work on.. I swear that at the Nissan plant every worker that touched a car as it went down the line took a bead of sweat or a tear and dropped it on the engine and it just grew into place because unless they built the car around the engine there seemed like no way to get your hands and arms around it to work on it or otherwise...
