2000 Xterra.

My son and I removed all the trim and bumpers to paint them black. They turned to that famous faded gray color. All went well, but now we realized the plastic just in front of the windshield kills the appearance. We can't seem to figure out how to remove it.

I know we need to remove the windshield wiper, but what is holding the plastic in place?

Never mind, I finally figured it out...Good Ole pry on it fashion.

But anyone ever hear of using a blow torch or heat gun on the plastics of the Xterras to get the black back and get rid of the gray?

I don't mind using Krylon Fusion, which alot of people recommend, but just wondere about the heatgun technique.

That's going to be a very temporary fix. Doesn't really get it that black anyway. Painting is better, glad you got it figured out

Seriously?

I just walked in the house and sat down near the pool. What was I doing outside? Pulling the plastic between the hood and glass so I could detail under it.

Want me to take a picture of the removed pieces and how I popped it off?

It is naked right now

cowling trim

Pull the antenna and wipers.

Next open the hood. Start in the middle near the joint. I slowly wiggled the pins up gently prying with one had trying to lift up near the windshield and the other trying to lift up near the weather stripping and work outwards as the dislodge.

Wiggle it until the pop loose, don't force it.

Thanks, Now I know WHERE to pry.... Just need to see if my son wants to do that. Everything on the Xterra is black, except for that part!
It should look like this when reassembled. LOL

What did you use to clean the plastic part? or did you spray it?

We have been using Kyrlon Fusion... so far so good, but have no idea how long it will last.

BTW, sharp looking - red and black!
Original plastic, never sprayed, never replaced. Just maintained. Easier said than done

what did you clean it with? I am sure it is WAY too late to clean up my son's Xterra... 2000.
If I told anyone on this board what I use, they and you would ignore me like my other advice. So, ancient Chinese secret stays with me.

In other words, do the leg work like I have. Sorry if I offended anyone but my fuse is pretty short these days.

Well, that short fuse will come in handy just in time for the 4th of July!
I'm too clever for that.

I just wanted a response so my advice would be heard.

Go to your local grocery store. Walk down the isle that contains cooking oils. Near the spray on pam products you will see an economy brand olive oil spray. Resists the urge to buy the more expensive brands as they don't work as well.

You are welcome.>:D

Ha, I think its too late for me to use that. It's 16 years old and a flat gray color.

You would be wrong, it will go back to dark grey, it was never black. I have done it for friends.

Skill level required is one star but patience level is slightly higher.
