Hello everybody,

I am having a problem with my 2004 Nissan Xterra. I have a 4 cylinder engine. My gas mileage went from ok to terrible. Now, I know you are going to say its a characteristic of the car but its BAD! I don't expect to be getting the gas mileage of a Toyota Prius but c'mon. I changed my spark plugs and distributor cap about 1000 miles ago and just changed my oxygen sensor, no luck. I recently got new shocks and tires, and they are the same tires I had before. After that my gas mileage was the same but now, about 6 months later, my gas mileage suddenly decreased. I put 20 dollars in yesterday and that was at 3.67 a gallon, that's 5.4 gallons. I traveled about 23 miles today and I'm back on E. there is no hole in my gas tank either. My air filter is clean, oil and filter are about 700 miles old. Any ideas about what it could be?

Where are you located? Most will tell you - winter gas, or high ethanol content gas. In other words, crap. And, if it's cold and your warming your car up for extended periods of time well, you get the picture. Still, even with all of that you should be doing better than 4ish mpg.

Make sure your e-brake is completely disengaged - crawl under and check the cable. Jack your truck up in the front and free spin the front tires and make sure your front brakes aren't dragging. Clean your MAF sensor with the appropriate spray cleaner. this will require you to take it off of the vehicle, but its a 15 minute 1 banana job. I don't know much about the 4 bangers - but hopefully some of these common tricks will help you out a bit!
