Hey folks -
Need some insight into some electric/battery issues I've been having since I purchased my Nissan Xterra from my uncle in May 2019.I'ts a 2010 Nissan XTerra Off-road.

The first issue I had was in late 2019, suddenly the car just shut off. I had absolutely no warning sign but the car would just repeatedly shut off while driving, especially while I was idling. We tried to jump the battery numerous times to no avail. After scanning for a code and taking to a mechanic, it turned out to be a camshaft sensor needing replacement. That seemed to fix the issue. Fast forward to March of 2020, when the battery just completely was toast, once again, no warning signs except for a little issue with acceleration that wasn't that noticeable until the battery had been replaced (you know, you realize it's better after you fix the issue). New battery seemed to work fine until recently.

A few weeks ago, I had left the keys in the ignition for a few hours after I moved the car to wash it. I came out and the battery was so dead that I couldn't even charge my battery charger. No problem - took the charger inside, charged it in the wall, and used it to charge my battery.

Fast forward to last night when my car just died out of the blue multiple times while I was driving to a friend's. After a certain point, it wouldn't even start. We tried to use the charger, but it didn't help (in fact, the battery charged the charger so quickly it didn't even seem like the battery needed charging). The only odd thing I noticed was that the door light had flashed a couple times earlier in the day.

After waiting for 90 minutes for a tow that never came, the car started and we were able to make it home with the car only dying once. We drove to autozone today, used the code reader and it found nothing. Checked the battery and alternator and found nothing. Ended up replacing the battery anyway because it was leaking battery acid and was still within warranty.

The only other thing I should note is that there is a strange electrical whirring and clicking that happens when I turn off the car that the guy at the auto store noticed. He said it's possible something is trying to reset and draining the battery. I know XTerras (and other Nissans) have electric issues and I am wondering if there is any chance this could be related?

Any insight is much appreciated, and I apologize for long post....it's a long-ass story. Thanks in advance!

That's a long history. Considering your current situation I would be using a voltmeter to check the battery voltage as it sits idle to see if it's dropping below 12 volts due to something possibly drawing on the battery in standby. If it still starts, check the battery voltage running to see if the alternator is charging normally at say 14.5vdc or so.
