Any idea what would cause the shift lever to oscillate like crazy in first gear?

It doesn't do it in 2nd/3rd/4th, only first. No weird noises, it's just bouncing forward and backward like crazy. About an inch of travel front-to-back.

It occasionally pops out of first, which I figure means the synchro is at the end of its lifespan. But, I have a hunch that the oscillations might have caused the synchro to wear out, and I don't really want to replace the synchro just to have the same thing happen again.

Year 2000 XE, 4x4, if that matters.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

IIRC there is no synchro for first gear in the first gen...but definitely something isn't right in the tranny

try a couple things pop the hood and start it and see if motor mounts are worn. And check the tranny mount. As for it popping out of gear you may have something internally wrong with it.
